Description
Upon an oval wooden platform with ebonized finish decorated with gold stencil and striping is arranged a wax baby lying in a meadow bed surrounded by delicate ferns and flowers, dressed in silk gown and bonnet. An acorn tree is at the baby's side, laden with leaves and miniature acorns, and there are three feathered birds in the tree. The mechanism and music operate from a pull-string at the side of base. The baby is sleeping, and then appears to wake up, opening its eyes, presumably seeing the birds and clapping its arms in delight. The wax has suffered from craquelure. The quality of the musical box is rich, strong and melodious. The entire scene is preserved under its original glass dome. Circa 1850.
