Description

The carved wooden figure with gesso finish under hand-painted detail is constructed in three parts: head, body, and right arm. His sculpted head with defined beard and moustache, and sculpted fancy hat, has glass movable eyes. His costume is a gala of colors representing a 17th century cavalier. His right arm is hinged and his right hand is upped for holding. The man stands upon a wooden base that hides a simple push/pull mechanism that allows the man to nod his head back and forth (causing his eyes to turn to the side) and his right arm to raise and lower. Early 19th century.
