Description

In a handsome book-matched walnut veneer case with rosewood and tulipwood banding, ebonized trim and fancy bronze carrying handles is a 12-tune cylinder music box with sister combs of 46 notes apiece. The cylinder pinning is in excellent condition as are all teeth and tips on both combs, and the movement is virtually untouched since the day it was made. The Sublime Harmonie musical effect, invented by Paillard in 1874, and relying on the slight dissonance and sub-harmonies that are generated when two notes of ostensibly the same pitch are sounded, has a delicious full sound with wonderful musicality. The tune program card shows a colorful, pastoral setting flanked by musical instruments with birds in the trees and a Harlequin playing his lute to the accompaniment of a female singer. The box has serial number 23424. Circa 1886.
