Standing upon a velvet-covered box is a little bisque doll dressed in French blue and red national colors and holding a drum and French flag. He has bisque head with painted features, brunette hair, carton body, wooden arms and feet, and is wearing a jester-style costume with white ruffled collar and cuffs, and matching jester cap. The doll is marked SFBJ Paris.
Movements: He turns his head from side to side, beats the drum, and periodically raises the flag to wave. Music Plays.
Historical References: The maker is unknown, although the automaton does have a signed Vichy motor. The theme appears to be patriotic, and perhaps the piece was created during the WWI era (the period of manufacture of the doll's head) as a patriotic gesture. The music is sweet, with a nostalgic feel. Circa 1915.
