Description

Standing upon a red velvet covered base is a bisque-head doll proudly holding a small wooden bird cage in which is perched a red feathered bird. She has a rare character face with wide beaming smile, row of teeth, brown glass paperweight eyes, blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, bisque hands, and is wearing her original costume of ivory silk satin with silk inset having cherry design, straw bonnet topped with berries, and holds a cluster of cherries in her hand. The doll is marked Depose Tete Jumeau and incised 205, and the key is original Lambert.

Movements: She turns her head side to side in eager anticipation while her little bird flutters about in its cage. Then she lifts her right arm and extends a cluster of cherries to the bird. It appears that the bird cage is being held by the girl's left hand, but actually it is attached to a metal rod from her torso. The bird's mechanism issues from this rod. Music plays.

Historical References: The automaton features the rare character model face from Jumeau; the beaming smile that is the keynote of this model enhancing the joyful scene envisioned by Lambert who aimed to create a miniature scene in which a child played with a bird in a gilded cage, except substituting music for the actual bird song. Circa 1895.
