Description

23" (58 cm.) Paper mache shoulder head of lady with oval face, elongated strong throat, sculpted hair in center part drawn in loop below each sculpted ear with ringlet curl at the back of each ear, and a coiled braided bun at the back of head, inset glass enamel eyes, accented nostrils, closed mouth with prim lips, slender kid body with shapely waist, wooden lower limbs, yellow painted boots, wearing original beautifully made (worn) cotton dress with detail at waist and sleeves, undergarments. Condition: very good, finish appears original throughout with slight early touch-up on some parts of shoulder plate. Comments: Germany, circa 1830, the doll belonged to the Hergescheimer family of West Chester, Pennsylvania and inspired the novel "Cytheria" written by Joseph Hergescheimer. Value Points: superb early doll whose detail of sculpting includes the curls behind each ear that are actually modeled rather than simply painted, original costume.
