28" (71 cm.) Lightly wax-coated over paper mache shoulder head of gentleman with solid domed head, painted black pate with center slit for insertion of flax hair wig, black enamel inset eyes, delicately painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, sculpted ears, on German slender kid body with wooden lower arms and legs. Condition: head is very good with some fading, body has significant patches, arms may be replaced. Comments: probably Andreas Voit, circa 1835,whose German dolls were exported to his native France and generally placed on French bodies. Value Points: wax-over-paper mache dolls of this style were virtually impossible to find; this example wears early silk and velvet costume, and was acquired by the present owner from the estate collection of Henri Rene d'Allemagne, the 19th century French doll and toy historian.
