Description

15" (38 cm) Alice. Each of three dolls is made of molded cloth, probably crepe, over padded armature, to represent characters from Alice in Wonderland. #ach is modeled uniquely to represent the character, and detailed with hand-painted features and mohair or flossed hair in appropriate style. The dolls wear original costumes with exceptional detail of construction and accessories. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Dorothy Heizer, the American artist of Essex Falls, New Jersey, created the Alice in Wonderland set in 1929. The artist was at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in the final years of the 19th century, and began her doll career in the 1920's; each of her works was made entirely by her own hand. The artist was a charter member of NIADA, and described the book, The American Doll Artist, as "the recognized dean". Few of her dolls are ever presented today. Value Points: the exceptional rarity of the trio is rivaled by the perfect state of preservation, with rich complexion and costume colors, intact accessories including pink flamingo and the Mad Hatter's cup and bread.
