All carved wooden doll with one-piece head and torso, oval-shaped face with carved definition of eye sockets, aristocratic nose, cheek ridges, with shaped lower chin, ears, strong throat, and carved bodice below carved bosom, with painted facial feature including blue eyes in deeply set sockets, painted lashes and brows , blushed cheeks, closed lips, hair wig, dowel jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, nicely shaped lower legs with painted orange slippers. Condition: finish is quite worn and may have some long-ago touch-up, fingers on right hand broken off. Comments: late 18th century, Continental, the doll formed part of the important collection of 19th century French toy historian Henri Rene d'Allemagne and was acquired by the present collector from his estate auction in the 1950's (see Encyclopedia of French Dolls, page 18-19). Value Points: splendid presence of the early doll with superb carving, wearing original dress with delicate crewel embroidery.
