16" (41 cm.) Swivel head of celluloid on matching shoulder plate, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accented smiling lips, brunette human hair over cork pate, kid gusset-jointed body, antique gown, undergarments, bonnet, shoes. Condition: very good, body a bit worn, horizontal line across back shoulder plate. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1873, his smiling facial model was deposed the previous year. The experiment with celluloid, invented in 1837,but enjoying a large success in France about 1870 as a substitute for ivory, was a logical one for Bru who was also interested in the use of rubber and gutta-percha in doll-making; it is possible that this celluloid poupee is one and the same as the doll he advertised in 1873 as poupee with "tete caoutchouc" (hardened rubber head). Value Points: important documentary doll is very rare to find.
