Description
18" x 12" (46 x 30 cm) cabinet. 9" x 11" cards.
Within a beautifully finished maitrise quality
walnut cabinet with inlay trim and drop front
having lock and key,are 33 heavy board cards
decorated with various papers and edged in gilt
embossing. Each card contains the needlework or
handiwork of Juliette and Maria Hennion during
the years 1885 and 1888 and each card is
identified by a beautifully hand-lettered paper
card describing the work thereon. The handiwork
ranges from delicate hand-mending to embroidery
to decorative objects for the home, and includes
such specific examples as
buttonholes,stockings,delicately embroidered
cuffs,edging,alphabet samplers,various styles of
handmade lace; as part of the sample work a
number of small doll costumes are included.
According to undocumented legend,the cabinet
belonged to the sisters Hennion, and one of the
cards is embroidered 1888. The creation of such a
masterwork was considered a testimony of the
perfect upbringing of the proper French daughter.
Superb condition of the perfectly preserved
cabinet and contents. Circa 1888.
