18" (46 cm.) Solid domed paper mache head with flat-cut neck socket,painted black delicate baby curls,black enamel inset eyes,painted lashes and brows,accented nostrils of upturned nose,closed mouth with center accent line,paper mache upper torso,lower torso,hands and feet,wooden lower arms and legs,muslin midriff,upper arms and legs,bellows "mama" crier in torso,loosely jointed wrists and ankles to suggest newborn babe. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany,circa 1860,the taufling style baby was inspired by the Japanese Ichimatsu doll introduced to the Western World at the 1850 London Exposition. Value Points: rare early model with fine original finish,original body,blue silk ribbons at joint limbs.
