Description

56" x 44" (142 cm x 112 cm.) Oil portrait on canvas depicts a 19th century Venetian room interior with young girl in red dress standing aside a table, holding a doll in her arms. The girl's hair is tied with a simple blue ribbon, and her dropped waist dress is embroidered with white soutache; the doll's dress is more ornate, having lavish white lace trim on the dress and matching bonnet. The table has inlaid decorations on its apron and supports a decorated vase with colorful flowers; the background includes painted columns and draped windows with wooded views in the distance. Gold-leaf wooden frame appears original. The painting is signed Fco. Del Campo 1891 in script on lower left. The Peruvian-born Venetian artist, Federico Del Campo, 1837-1923, was celebrated for paintings of Venice scenes, although unlike his fellow artists he was also praised for figure paintings; this painting is distinctive for its subject matter and size, both unusual for this artist who likely was commissioned by a wealthy Venetian to portray his daughter.
