Description

15" (39 cm.) Arranged upon its original wooden platform is a paper-mache sculpted arrangement of windmill on a rocky knoll alongside a waterfall. A paper mache donkey with moveable head stands nearby, and a bisque headed doll peeks from out the side window of the windmill. The window is covered by a tin door, and when the automaton is wound and lever released, music plays, the windmill door open and closes and the little boy peeks his head in and out as though urging the donkey to "move, move"; meanwhile the windmill turns, and the donkey nods its head. Condition: generally excellent, functions well, all original. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1890, from their series of automata featuring amusing scenes of provincial life; another example, The Happy Drunkard, appeared in the auction of the private collection of Christian Bailly. Value Points: rare example, of which few are known to exist, with amusing antics, well-detailed construction including painting of vines and flowers on the windmill.
