Pale bisque shoulder head with rounded facial shape, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth with slightly parted lips, double row of tiny teeth, lambswool wig cap, kid-over-wooden upper torso with shapely waist and upper dowel-jointed arms, bisque arms from above the elbows, curled fingers, carton moule cone-shaped skirt that contains clockwork mechanism, three wheeled base. When wound, the doll revolves around in a circle, pauses, reverses, glides forward, while arms wave up and down. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Jules Steiner, the mechanical gliding lady was deposed in 1867. Value Points: exquisite state of preservation of the rare early patented doll, with superb bisque and eyes, wearing original white pique gown with batiste and blue silk ribbon trim, matching bonnet, and stored in her original packing box with label from the important Parisian toy store Aux Reves de L'Enfance.
