20" (51 cm.) Bisque socket head, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows with decorative glaze, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with wide beaming smile, painted row of teeth, accented lips, impressed generous dimples, brunette human hair over cork pate, Jumeau composition and wooden ball-jointed body, antique costume. Condition: tiny chip at left crown rim with very faint emanating line to top of ear, otherwise excellent. Marks: 203 8. Comments: Emile Jumeau, his 200 series of character dolls were modeled originally in smaller sizes for use as automaton character heads, and about 1895 appeared in a rare series of bebes. Few examples of the size 8 model were made; in 1899 only 3 examples were listed in the Jumeau inventory. The doll is photographed in The Jumeau Book by Theimer and Theriault, page 358. Value Points: very choice quality of modeling with deeply sculpted features, dimpled expression, fine dewy patina of bisque, on the rare appealing character. From the Seeley Family Doll Collection, the doll was featured in many books by Mildred Seeley.
