Description

The correspondence includes more than 60 hand-written letters from O'Neill to Johns, many with amusing illustrations by the artist. There are envelopes with return addresses from Carabas and from Rose O'Neill's Kewpie Shop at 646 Madison Avenue in New York. There are telegrams and poems and in a separate folder there are even letters from Orrick John's father lamenting that his son continues to ask for money. There is a final letter from O'Neill in January 1940 advising Johns that she is "creeping along with my memoirs" trying to make a pleasant anecdotal thing of it as behooves the mother of the Kewpies." In 1944 she died, the memoir unpublished.
