Description

Nine dolls, each 4 1/2" (11 cm.) Each is standing all-bisque Kewpie with jointed arms, comprising a complete wedding party: the minister with black crepe paper robes and bible, with painted glasses, the bride with pleated crepe paper skirt and tulle veil, the groom with black crepe paper jacket and top hat, three bridesmaids, and three ushers in peach crepe paper costumes with painted shoes along with pot of flowers. Each of the figures (except one) is attached to its original round wooden base. In 1917, a series of 90 costumed Kewpies was offered, among them the dolls in this group, each wearing its original costume and likely presented at a society wedding of that year. The set is extremely rare; the minister with painted spectacles is virtually unknown.
