Black paper mache composition head with tightly curled sculpted black curls, large brown glass inset eyes, heavy eyelids, thick black sculpted brows in furrowed expression, broad nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth with downcast pouty lips, three sculpted tears, muslin torso, disc- jointed brown composition arms and legs, cotton muslin dress with smocking detail, undergarments, black stockings, shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: L.M. (shoulder plate) Leotta 2 years 1920 (handwritten, handstitched tag on front torso). Comments: attributed to Georgia artist, Leo Moss, circa 1920; the child with tears is believed to have been a tribute to the young daughter of Moss. Value Points: superb artistry of the soulful-faced child with most appealing characterization, fine original condition, intriguing mystery of paper label.
