20" (51 cm.) With rich gilt ormolu frame having fretwork railing that encloses a velvet cushion tufted with metal gilt petals, and decorated all around with elaborately shaped ormolu flowers, leaves, four framed mirrors, dove with wreath in its beak, and porcelain flowers. Arranged around the cushion is an orange blossom wedding coronet and flowers. The arrangement is presented upon a wooden base, under blown glass dome. The presentation of a "globe de marriage" upon engagement was traditional in certain French provincial regions, particularly Normandy, throughout the early 19th century, and according to tradition, a mirror was added to the arrangement for each year of engagement. Excellent condition. Circa 1875.
