Description

18" overall. Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden base is a bisque-headed doll with brown glass eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with accented lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, alongside a tin stove with copper pot in which is hidden a white fur cat. When wound, music plays, and a series of amusing movements take place: the cuisinier turns his head, lifts and "drinks" from the wine bottle in his right hand, then lifts the lid of the cooking kettle and the cat pops out. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Tete Jumeau bte SGDG (head, along with artist checkmarks). Comments: Roullet et Decamps, the automaton was described in their 1890 era catalog and was offered with man or woman cook. Value Points: most amusing early automaton in superbly preserved condition including costume, accessories, and movement.
