Description

20" (50 cm) wagon. 32" (81 cm) overall. A wooden parade flatbed wagon with stage top is lavishly decorated with embossed paperboard on the sides having richly gilded circus scenes including chariot rider with horse, lion head, and bareback rider, and is labeled with raised letters "Humpty Dumpty Circus". The flatbed was decorated wooden wheels, driver's seat with clown driver, chained posts around the perimeter, and is driven by a team of dappled horses with harnesses on wooden wheeled base. Standing upon the wagon, as though on exhibit, are three characters, each with overscaled paper mache head having intricate details of painting and accessories such as spectacles and cap, and classic Schoenhut clown body, comprising Foxy Grandpa, Jockey, and Baby. Condition: good to very good, base of horses replaced, one chain post missing, two chain posts replaced, some overall dustiness and flakes to paint on back of baby head, minor face touch-up on grandpa and jockey. Comments: Schoenhut, circa 1910 from their series of four circus wagons, made for a very few years, with all of the original characters and superb and imaginative design.
