Paper mache socket head with deeply impressed character features of solemn-faced child, solid dome, blue glass enamel inset eyes with spiral threading, painted lashes, rose blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with shaded lips, brunette mohair wig, five piece paper mache toddler body with side-hip jointing, well-detailed musculature, antique muslin and lace costume with woven bourrelet cap, slippers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: early period bebe in the style of first bebes created by Jumeau and Schmitt, circa 1875, prior to bisque production; the dolls are discussed in The Jumeau Book, page 73, although this example has exceptional characterization, including detail of sculpted ears, mouth and around the eyes. Value Points: extremely rare doll whose value is enhanced by its great appeal and original condition.
