23" (58 cm.) Standing upon a green velvet covered base is a brown-complexioned man with paper mache head, highly characterized features, brown eyes with leather lashed lids, hinged jaw, elegantly shaped slender carton torso and legs, metal rod upper arms, composition forearms, wearing black tights, red silk jacket, ruffled shirt, sash, diamond fob, tall hat, and holding a wooden banjo. When wound, he moves his head in elaborate realistic movements, eyelids blink, mouth opens and closes as though he is singing in time to the tune he is strumming on his banjo. Condition: generally excellent, two fingers reglued. Comments: Vichy, circa 1880. Value Points: rare and well- preserved automaton, well-functioning with amusing manner, original finish, two tunes (original label on base).
