Description
each about 7" (17 cm.) Each of three figures depicting adult black person is of poured wax with highly characterized features, tiny glass bead eyes, sculpted hair, body posed in unique manner, attached to original wooden base. Each doll is wearing imaginative cotton costume that is lightly wax-dipped to hold its position, and accessories appropriate to the doll are included. Condition: generally excellent, few finger tips missing. Marks: Harriet's 318 Royal Street New Orleans, La. (paper label on base of man). Comments: the wax miniature portrait dolls were made by the Vargas family of New Orleans in the early 20th century. Value Points: superb detail of artistry on the rarely found American figures.
