Solid domed bisque head with rounded facial modeling of young child, blue glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, dark painted lashes, rose blushed eye shadow, brushstroked and feathered brows with decorative glaze, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, open mouth with accented lips, row of tiny porcelain teeth, carton torso containing clockwork mechanism, composition curved arms with separately defined fingers, kid- over-metal leg hinges. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1885,the model known as "Gigoteur"; when wound the doll turns head from side to side, waves arms and legs and cries "mama"; the doll is considered a significant milestone in doll history, ushering in the child-doll era. Value Points: superb unplayed with condition, the doll has original wig, very elaborate baby costume with French embroidery, matching cap, undergarments, and is seated in antique French maplewood high chair.
