Description

8"-13"h. The set includes six human figures and two animals, each constructed of wood, paper mache, and gesso, with features uniquely sculpted to depict the storybook character as it appeared in early 20th century children's literature; each with sculpted hair, vividly painted features and complexion, original cloth costume, and original body articulation that allows the figure to be displayed as a doll, or manipulated puppet-fashion by the pull strings and wooden handles that are still attached. Condition: near mint, Wicked Witch has few paint flakes on face. Marks: A. Storch Syn Praha (wooden handles). Comments: circa 1900, the figures were created in the Sonneberg toy factory of Richard Metzler, Jr who specialized in wooden and paper mache toys of this type. The set was exhibited at The Grand Lady Museum of New Hampshire for a number of years. Value Points: imaginative details and superbly preserved condition of all the Hansel and Gretel characters including Hansel and Gretel, Mother, Grandmother, Wicked Witch, Woodsman, wolf and donkey.
