Description
9" (23 cm). One-piece statuette of ponytail
Barbie wearing sculpted "Solo in the Spotlight
Costume" standing on stage-like base with
microphone in front. The statuette is finished in
bronze-like finish with textured gown and
hair, the face and arms are smooth. The rarity of
the statue and its superb workmanship of
sculpture and finish lend credence to the theory
that the figure was produced, circa 1960,intended
as a type of "Oscar" for the doll world, either
celebrating the doll itself or important
retailers. In a 2003 interview with Elliott
Handler he stated his belief that this was a
special award statuette given at an annual
luncheon at Mattel. An article about the
statuette has appeared in Barbie Bazaar.
