19" (48 cm). Pressed bisque socket head with elongated facial modeling, full cheeks, and hint of double chin, wide almond-shaped blue glass enamel eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauve blushed eye shadow, brushstroked and multi-feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, aquiline nose, closed mouth with accented pale lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight- loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists and flat-cut derriere. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Sch (in shield) 2 (on head) Sch (in shield, on derriere). Comments: Schmitt et Fils, circa 1882,the doll bears a remarkable resemblance to early almond-eyed portrait bebes by Jumeau. Value Points: very rare early Schmitt bebe with distinctive portrait like facial modeling, very choice bisque and painting, original signed body, superb antique costume of midnight- brown velvet with silk and black lace trim, pearl buttons decorations, straw bonnet with lace and ivory silk ribbons, undergarments, black leather shoes with silk rosettes signed with figure of doll, undergarments, rose stockings.
