Description

Arranged upon a wooden platform is a cardboard building with painted and applied architectural details including brick cornices, tower with birds flying around the attic window, painted clock face, fence, and poster with historic scenes of note. Arranged on various levels of the building are seven figures and a goat. The figures are animated by sand which, when poured into a hidden chute at the reverse, causes a hidden wheel to turn and activate the strings that move the figures. Paper label at the back indicates the maker as Landras at 226 Galerie de Bois at the Palais Royal. Movements: man beats drum with two hands, two men play violin, goat nods head up and down, man hammers anvil, man stokes fireplace, and (hidden behind a scene with cherub appliques) is an erotic scene with movements by man and woman. Pierre Landras, an early toy merchant specialized in luxury toys as indicated by his location, was in business as early as 1798 and until 1830. He attached labels to his luxury toys, dolls and automata as indicated by this example, but very few are known to exist. By Pierre Landras, France, circa 1800. 18" (46 cm). Eight movements.
