Description

Upon a paper mache base with sculpted garden-like floor is a man with paper mache head having expressive handsome features, modeled moustache, brown glass eyes, mohair wig, carton torso and legs, and composition hands. The man is balanced upon tall wooden stilts. He wears a fancy silk striped jacket, pink silk vest with decorative bands and belt, bow tie, orange silk pants with ribbon garters, tall leather boots, and a tall silk top hat. In his right hand he holds a bottle of wine. Movements: he turns his head from side to side in a convoluted manner; then he lifts the bottle to his mouth and leans backward to take a swig; then his entire body sways back and forth as though trying to balance; then he lifts left hand for balance while simultaneously lifting his left leg and stilt to balance only on the right stilt. An automaton featuring a clown on stilts but with the same mechanism was also made by this firm. This versions, man with moustache on stilts, is much rarer; only three or four others are known to exist. Roullet & Decamps. Circa 1900. 32" (81 cm) overall. Six movements. Two tunes.
