
Arranged upon a red velvet covered wooden flat base is a bisque-head girl with brown glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and lower legs arranged in seated position, composition forearms and hands sculpted as though knitting. The girl is seated upon a wooden chair with bamboo style carvings, wearing pale green silk dress with lavish lace and paillette trim, green silk shoes. The head, made by Jumeau, is marked Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 5. Movements: she nods her head forward and backward as though observing her work, and her lower arms busily turn to and fro giving an illusion that she is knitting. The automaton appeared in an early catalog by Roullet et Decamps, named Bebe Tricoteur,No.256. By Roullet et Decamps, France, circa 1895. 17" (45 cm). Two movements. One tune.
