A bisque-headed doll with cobalt blue glass eyes, closed mouth, delicate complexion, blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, bisque arms and jointed knees is standing on a green velvet covered flat base, on tip-toe in dancing pose. The bisque head was from Barrois. Label on base indicates the tunes are Valse de Faust and Noce de Figaro. The doll wears a silk costume lavishly decorated with paillettes and pearls, silk shoes, and carries a tambourine. Movements: the figure twirls all around on one toe, leans head from side to side, shakes tambourine with twisting motion of hand, and kicks right foot rapidly three times in sequence to the movement. The automaton, named Danseur Espagnole, was illustrated in the 1882 and 1884 catalogs of the Paris department store Au Louvre. A nearly identical automaton, named Bayadere, but without the foot movement, was offered by Roullet. Circa 1880. 20" (51 cm). Four movements. Two tunes. Exhibition: Hospice Saint-Charles,Liege,1994.
