Description

A bisque-head lady with blue glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, bisque forearms, is standing upon a velvet-covered flat base. She wears a rose silk dress and velvet patterned jacket, large bonnet and wooden shoes, dressed as though going to market. Attached to the lady by a metal rod at her right torso is a wicker market basket that appears to be held on her arm, and within the basket is a chicken. The doll head, by Jumeau, is marked Depose E. 6 J. Movements: the girl moves her head in side to side and nodding circular motions, the lid of the basket opens to reveal the chicken; the chicken moves about and "cheeps"; the lid closes. The luxury quality of the very rare automaton is emphasized by the use of Jumeau's signature head model, E.J. Few examples are known to exist of this unusual automaton. By Gustav Vichy, France, circa 1885. 22" (56 cm). Four movements and "cheep". Two tunes.
