Description

The sculpted wooden lady with jointing at each shoulder, metal lower arms, and fusee mechanism inside skirt, has a three-wheeled base. Her hair and facial features are hand-painted as is her well-detailed costume, strands of tiny pearls appear at her throat. The doll is housed in original wooden cabinet with brass handle and label Mademoiselle Catherina. Around the bottom of her skirt is a provenance reading "The Gift of Eleanor Greene Skutt of Chelsea to Eleanor Botwright of (illegible)wich, MDCCLXXIV". Movements: the doll glides forward and in circular motion, her arms moving up and down. English, Maker unknown. Circa 1824. 7" (18 cm). Fusee gliding movement Exhibits: Bagatelle, Paris, 1993.
