A bisque-headed man with portrait like features, very large deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes, closed mouth, aquiline nose, shaped chin tip, blonde mohair wig, bisque hands, carton torso and legs arranged in artistic yet realistic pose is posed standing on a velvet-covered wooden flat base. The man wears aqua silk Marquis costume with gilt buttons, lavish lace jabot and cuffs, silk leggings, aqua silk shoes, matching hat with upturned side brim, and carries an inlay wooden mandolin. The bisque head is from a rare portrait series created by Jumeau. Movements: he moves his head very far to the left, pauses, nods deeply forward, pauses and repeats, all the while strumming the mandolin. The model appeared in the early catalog of Roullet named Petit Duc, No 20,although in a smaller size, priced at the costly 75 francs. The quality of the bisque portrait head and the larger size of this example indicates its extra luxury status. France, circa 1880. 24" (62 cm). Three movements. Two tunes.
