Description

A bisque-head boy with laughing expression, blue glass paperweight eyes, wide beaming smile on closed mouth, modeled teeth, auburn wig, carton torso and legs, and bisque hands is standing upon a velvet-covered wooden platform. He wears a striped silk jacket, pale yellow short pants, leggings, apron and tucked shirt, and a chef's hat. A baker's basket is attached to his front torso and contains two biscuits and a large brioche under which is hidden a kitten. The bisque head, by Jumeau from the 200 character series created by commission to Lambert, is marked 203 Depose Tete Jumeau 4; the key is marked L.B.; the pastry cloth is embroidered A La Renommee and a paper label on the base indicates one tune named Les Cents Vierges. Movements: he turns to the right, nods and lifts his right hand indicating the pastries he offers for sale, he turns to the left, nods and lifts the lid of the pastry at which time a little kitten pops out, then retreats when the chef lowers the lid. About 1892 Lambert commissioned a special series of character heads from Jumeau to enhance the activities that were performed by his automata, in this case a happy beaming-face chef. This automaton was created for the Parisian confiserie A La Renommee, as a shop promotional model. Another example of promotional purposes for classic automaton is #121, this catalog. Leopold Lambert, France. Circa 1895. 20" (51 cm). Five movements. One tune.
