Description

Arranged upon a red velvet covered wooden base is a composition-head character depicting an aged woman with incised wrinkles, brown glass eyes, hinged eyelids, open mouth with two rows of teeth, tongue, white mohair fleeced wig, carton torso and legs, composition hands, posed in seated position on wooden chair with carved spindles. She is wearing spectacles, lace cap, silk dress and black apron,black stockings and leather shoes, and is holding knitting needles and needles. Movements: she nods her head up and down, eyelids open and close and she knits with realistic movement of her lower arms. The automaton appeared in an early Roullet et Decamps catalog named Vieille Tricoteuse, No 265. By Roullet et Decamps, France, circa 1900. 25" (64 cm). Three movements. One tune.
