
Arranged upon an ebony-finished wooden base is a paper mache sculpture of a country setting with little caves, rock mounds, and a long tree branch that forms an arbor and is decorated with tree leaves and a hidden feathered bird. A wooden wine cask is positioned in the center of the setting, and upon it is seated a composition-head monkey with glass eyes, leather eyelids, hinged jaw, teeth, fur hair, painted nose, carton torso, paper mache hands, wearing silk and velvet costume of aristocracy. A porcelain faced French clock is included in the arrangement. The monkey holds a bottle in one hand, and a biscuit in the other. Movements: he turns head to the right, lowers eyelids, pours wine, turns to the left and lifts his left hand as though to eat the biscuit. France, circa 1875. 22" (56 cm). Five movements. Two tunes.
