Arranged upon paper mache sculpted base that suggests a country garden scene, with arbor of leaves and flowers, are two monkeys, each with glass eyes, dark brown monkey face, hinged mouth, fur hair and beard, paper mache hands and feet, and wearing elaborate silk costumes and caps with gilt paper band trim. Each monkey holds a musical instrument, and nearby are accessories including music stand and violin case. The entire arrangement is under a glass dome. Movements: The monkey on the left plays the violin; the monkey on right strums the harp alternately with each hand; each monkey moves head from side to side, and then up and down, while mouth opens and closes. By Jean Phalibois, France. Circa 1875. 27" (68 cm). 10 movements (five for each monkey). Two tunes.
