Description

A bisque-head chef with brown glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, carton torso, and bisque hands is hiding inside a large paper mache pastry brioche. The chef wears a fancy silk jacket, chef's cap, and holds a little pastry in his hand. The head, by Jumeau, is marked Depose Tete Jumeau. Movements: the pastry lid slowly rises and the chef peeks out from his hiding place inside; he lifts his hand toward his mouth about to eat the little pastry he is holding, then looks around, and, as though he spotted someone, quickly jumps back into his hiding place inside the large brioche; the lid snaps shut. France. Circa 1895. 10 1/2" (26 cm) brioche with lid closed. Four movements. One tune.
