Description
A monkey-person with very aristocratic appearance, having brown glass eyes, black dramatic painting around eyes and mouth, two rows of teeth, impressed nostrils, grey mohair wig, metal hands, and composition torso and legs is wearing an elaborate silk Marquis costume with rich buttons and black Marquis hat with metallic gilt passamenterie. He is seated beside a wooden harp with rich gilt ormolu decorations including lion's head carving. The automaton is presented upon a flat base with gold velvet cover. Movements: the monkey realistically strums the harp with fingers of both hands, while his eyelids blink, hinged jaw opens and closes, head moves up and down, and then sideways. Circa 1885. 19" height (48 cm). Five movements. Two tunes.
