Description

A bisque-head lady with portrait like face created for the automaton series of Roullet, has blue glass paperweight eyes, aquiline nose, open mouth, double row of tiny teeth, blonde mohair wig, separate bisque shoulderplate with modeled bosom, carton torso and legs, bisque forearms and hands. Attached to the side torso of the lady by a hidden metal rod is a gilded wicker base that contains a fleeced lamb with glass eyes and hinged jaw. The woman's left arm is posed as though she is carrying the basket, and she is wearing an elaborate rose silk and lace costume, bonnet and shoes in the manner of the French painter, Watteau. The head, by Jumeau, is marked Depose Tete Jumeau SGDG 8. Movements: she turns her head from side to side in an elaborate circular motion, then nods, she lifts her right hand with small bouquet of flowers toward the basket as though offering the flowers to the lamb, the lid of the basket opens, and the little lamb is seen; his mouth opens and closes and he "baa-as" in a realistic manner. By Jean Roullet, France, circa 1880. 23" (58 cm). Five movements and "baa-a". Two tunes.
