Description

A bisque-head doll with blue glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, pierced ears, carton body and legs, and bisque hands is wearing a blue and gold silk jester costume with gilt metallic threads, paillettes, matching jester cap, and fancy slippers and is standing upon a red velvet-covered wooden platform. A large tin and wooden drum with colorfully decorated ribbons is mounted on a drum base in front of the girl. The doll is marked Depose Tete Jumeau. Movements: her head turns from side to side, her right arm swings back and forth to beat the drum, her left arm lifts up and down to clang cymbals. The automaton appeared in an early catalog of Roullet et Decamps named Polichinelle, No. 218,described and illustrated as a woman despite the reference to that traditionally male figure of French legend. France. Circa 1900. 20" (51 cm). Three movements. One tune.
