Description

A composition-head character portraying the legendary Polichinelle has highly stylized facial sculpting with angular cheeks, pointy chin and elongated nose, brown glass eyes, leather eyelids with mohair lashes and brows, open mouth with double row of teeth, blonde fleeced curly wig, carton torso with Polichinelle humps at back and front torso, carton legs in standing pose with upturned toes, metal hands. He is wearing a luxurious blue and blue silk jester costume with metallic gilt soutache embroidery and fringe, lace edging, ribbon rosettes on shoe tips, and is holding a violin and bow in his hands. Movements: he turns his head in a circular and nodding fashion, blinks eyelids, and plays the violin by intricate movement of his entire arm in a very realistic manner. Polichinelle is from a rare series of automata by Jean Roullet, with original Theroude mechanisms, probably created for the 1867 Paris International Exposition. The model was made in two versions, with base or with weight feet and no base, and it appeared in an early Roullet catalog named Polichinelle No. 8,at the luxury price of 85 francs. By Jean Roullet, France, circa 1867. 30" (76 cm). Four movements. One tune.
