Description

A bisque-head lady with portrait like features, aquiline nose, small blue enamel glass eyes, closed mouth with slightly smiling expression, blonde mohair wig with very elaborate original coiffure decorated with beads and flowers, separate bisque shoulderplate, carton upper torso with unusual shortened legs that are attached, under the costume, to a step-shaped wooden base in such a manner that the lady appears full-height. There are three brass wheels at the bottom of the base. In her paper mache hands she clasps a decorated wooden mandolin. The lady wears an elaborate rose silk gown with moss green ribbon trim and Alencon lace and has elaborate coral jewelry and earrings. Movements: the lady elegantly turns her head from side to side in graceful motion, glides forward and in circles, and periodically strums the mandolin. Alexandre Theroude, France. Circa 1865. 16" (40 cm). Four movements. Two tunes. Exhibits: Bagatelle, Paris, 1993.
