Posed upon a wooden base is a composition-head monkey with painted complexion, fur hair, carton torso and legs, and composition hands He is posed in a seated position beneath an unusual arbor of rose branches and petals, upon a moss-covered ground. He is wearing an elaborate costume comprising gilt-paper edged vest and jacket, velvet jacket with epaulets, purple silk trousers, silk shirt, velvet fancy cap, and has a monocle at one eye, a polishing brush in his right hand, and a boot in his left hand; other shoes are scattered on the floor. Movements: he turns his head, nods, eyes blink, mouth hinges open and closed, and his right arm moves the brush back and forth, while his left arm pivots the boot for polishing. By Jean Phalibois, France, circa 1875. 26" (65 cm). Six movements. Two tunes.
