Description

A composition-head man with brown glass eyes, mohair moustache and wig in clown coiffure, carton torso and legs, bisque forearms, is posed standing upon a velvet-covered wooden base. He wears an elaborate silk clown costume, holds a wooden wand in his right hand and a menu card with little dancing doll in his left hand. Another menu card is attached to a clip on the base. Movements: he turns his head from side to side, lifts the wand and snaps it down, causing the menu card on the platform to flip around, lifts the menu card in his left hand. A similar automaton named Negre Frappeur,No73 appeared in the Lambert catalog, also at 73 cm. The automaton was designed as a publicity attention-getter. Circa 1890. 29" (73 cm). Four movements.
