Description

Standing upon a velvet covered flat base is a bisque-head man with portrait like face, very regal expression, brown glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, very artistically painted complexion and facial features, brunette human hair, carton torso and legs, metal hands. He wears an elaborate costume with patterned short pants, rose silk vest with soutache embroidery and red and gold tassel balls, a very long silk brocade cape with ruffled border, and a green silk smock with full sleeves and collar, and matching Marquis cap with feathers and rosette, and tightly fitted leather boots with gold trim. He stands beside a wooden harp with gold-leaf trim. The bisque head, made by Jumeau, is marked Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 10. Movements: he moves his head in a series of complicated nods and turns as though in rhythm with the music, and his hands, independently of each other, move up and down the strings. The automaton, named Pfifferari,No,191,appeared in an early catalog of Roullet & Decamps, priced in the luxury class at 125 francs. The use of the rare portrait face by Jumeau was an additional indication of its rarity and luxury status. Roullet & Decamps, France, circa 1880. 30" (76 cm). Four movements. Two tunes. Exhibits: Bagatelle,Paris,1993.
