19" (48 cm). Bisque socket head, bright blue glass eyes that operate from clockwork mechanism in torso that is connected to music box, painted lashes, brushstroked brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with shaded and outlined lips, pierced ears, auburn mohair wig over cork pate, original composition and wooden fully-jointed body with bellows breathing mechanism, sleeping eye mechanism and music box in torso. Condition: generally excellent, well functioning. Marks: Brevete SGDG Bru JneR Y. 8 M. (head) Bebe Bru (paper label on torso. Comments: When wound, and lever released, the doll "breathes", then opens or closes eyes, and repeats motion; all the while music plays. The doll was patented by Girard for Bru in 1892 as "Bebe Automate Respirant" and described as having the "true aspect of an animated being". Value Points: among the rarest of the Bru bebes, the doll was the last of the series of musical dolls proposed by Bru, beginning with the surprise poupee of 1872 and continuing with the Bebe Musique of 1882,and finally this model of 1892; the musical models appear to have been introduced every ten years but were only made for one or two years each time. Value Points: very rare Bru bebe with complicated and well- functioning mechanism; few examples are known to exist.
